Chennai,Mar 18 (tamilnaducentral):The central election committee (CEC) of the BJP on Friday announced that music director-lyricist Gangai Amaran will be the party’s candidate in the RK Nagar bypoll scheduled on April 12. 69-year-old Gangai Amaran’s candidature was announced on the party’s website by the Secretary of the CEC, Union Minister J.P. Nadda.
Gangai Amaran, the younger brother of music maestro Ilayaraja wears many hats of that of script writer, actor, singer, TV host and film director. He joined the BJP in 2014 and currently heads the State unit’s cultural cell.
Though Tamil Nadu BJP president Tamilisai Soundararajan had initially shown an interest in contesting the RK Nagar bypoll, she had withdrawn on the advice of the BJP top brass. Expressing happiness over his nomination, Tamilisai Soundararajan said that Gangai Amaran was their top choice in the list of names sent to the CEC.
Gangai Amaran as the BJP candidate has to vie with AIADMK -Sasikala faction TTV Dinakaran, DMK’s Marudha Ganesh, OPS group’s Madhusudhanan and Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepa Jayakumar.
Gangai Amaran told media persons that the political scene in Tamil Nadu is mired in confusion and that the people of the state will support BJP in the upcoming bypoll and expressed confidence that he would win as the people are looking for some good change.
Gangai Amaran’s brush with Sasikala goes back to 1994 that ended on a sour note. He was then pressured to sell his 22-acre farmhouse at Payyanur on Old Mahabalipuram Road to her, who reportedly told him that ‘Jayalalithaa liked his farmhouse’. The farmhouse that reportedly cost some crores was sold off for a pittance, said reports.
