Chennai,Dec31(tamilnaducentral): Sasikala Natarajan, close aide of late Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa for 33 years assumed the key post of AIADMK as its general secretary after the post was left vacant following the demise of late AIADMK supremo.

Sasikala addressed the gathering from AIADMK headquarters in Royapettah. She paid tearful tributes to Jayalalithaa and said she would tirelessly work for the Kazhagam the rest of her life.

Sasikala tearfully said: ” AIADMK was life to Amma while Amma remained my life. Whoever comes, AIADMK will win and rule Tamil Nadu for 100 years, abiding by the principles and ideals set down by Amma.” She closed her address thanking cadres and supporters for unanimously electing her as the AIADMK general secretary.

Sasikala has become the second woman to take on the party leadership after J Jayalalithaa.She would remain the interim general secretary till she is formally elected to the post.

Clad in a green silk saree and wearing a bindi in a style similar to that of Jayalalithaa, Sasikala evoked a amma-like feeling among the masses and paid floral tributes to late Tamil Nadu chief minister and evoked the greatness of leaders like Periyar, Anna and MGR amid the chants of ‘ chinnamma vazhga’ alongside ‘puratchi thalaivi amma vazhga.’

Referring to the observation of Justices S. Vaidhyanathan and V. Parthiban, DMK treasurer and opposition leader MK Stalin on Friday called for a probe into the death of former chief minister Jayalalithaa by a sitting judge of the Madras High Court. Stalin remarked it was the responsibility of the Tamil Nadu government to release details on the circumstances that led to her demise and the kind of treatment provided to her.

Demanding that the Tamil Nadu government declare the state as drought hit, a group of farmers led by Desiya Thennidhiya Nadhigal Inaippu Sangam president P Ayyakannu, staged a demonstration at Tiruchi yesterday holding dead rats in their mouths. It was to indicate that they were forced to eat rat meat out of poverty. 7 farmers have died today owing to failed monsoon and poor harvest.
