Chennai, Sep 2(tamilnaducentral): AIADMK considered to be full of corrupt leaders has an eight time MLA and five time minister, being neck-deep in debt. He has decided to stay away from active politics, as AIADMK top brass is not willing to bail him out. He is none other than K A Sengottaiyan, strongman of Kongu Nadu region.
A staunch loyalist of Jayalalithaa,Sengottaiyan stood by her when the party split between Janaki and her. Groomed by MGR, he, Thirunavukkarasu and KKSSR were the trio who stood by Jayalalithaa. Of these, two had changed sides to DMK. Sengottaiyan was the person who drew up Jayalalithaa’s campaign in Kongu districts and prepared speeches for her according to the constituency. She also never missed giving a speech at the constituency that Sengottaiyan contested.
Though he was in the good books of Jayalalithaa, he was given relatively lighter portfolios that are handled by junior AIADMK MLAs. It was in 2011 AIADMK ministry, that he got revenue portfolio considered to be third most important in the cabinet. He won from Sathyamangalam and later made Gobichettipalayam his bastion. Due to his proximity to Jayalalithaa, DMK regime in 1996 foisted a case of irregularities in purchase of spare parts for State buses during his tenure as transport minister.
In 2012, he got caught in a web of Poes Garden politics. He blurted out that Sasikala fixed MLA tickets and later appointments to key posts in return for money. Sasikala was given marching orders. However, Sasikala managed to come back. Sengottaiyan was sacked and stripped of being district secretary.
In 2016, he was given the ticket to contest on AIADMK symbol in his stronghold. This was seen as a comeback. He did not figure in the ministers’ list, while many from Kongu regions like Tirupur, Coimbatore, Salem and Namakkal got represented.
Sources say that AIADMK HQ gave him just Rs 10 lakhs for campaigning. He has properties which are owned jointly by other family members. Facing a liquidity crunch, he borrowed from businessmen. As he does not figure in the cabinet, those who loaned him money are asking it back.
AIADMK sources say that Sengottaiyan has decided to more or less stay away from active politics and find ways to pay off his debts. Many of his friends in the cabinet have declined to help him.
