Chennai,May6(tamilnaducentral): New Saravana Stores named `The Legend” was inaugurated by film celebrities- Madhavan, Jayam Ravi, Hansika Motwani, Tamannaah and lyricist Vairamuthu. Located at MTH Road in Padi and close to Anna Nagar, the owners claim that this is the biggest showroom for textiles, jewellery and consumer products in India. It is a nine-storeyed building. The commercial for the store stood out as the owner S S Saravanan took part in it along with film actors.
Saravana Stores is the biggest retail chain located in one city. Centered around Chennai, it has branches in West Mambalam, T-Nagar, Anna Nagar, Padi, Purasawalkam, Chromepet and Kodambakkam. Outside Chennai, it has two outlets in Coimbatore.
The group is run by two brothers- Rajaratnam and Saravanan Arul. Rajaratnam is 281st richest Indian with a Rs 1,782 crore assets in the list for 2015 of Forbes. Arul operates the stores under the logo of Selvarathinam.Founded by three brothers, Rajaratnam is the only surviving brother. Second generation has taken over the operations. There are reports that it may expand to other metros soon. It is also into ice-cream business with the brand Jamai. It has 3000 outlets across Tamil Nadu. 1000 outlets are in Chennai alone.
The showrooms had come under scanner after a fire broke out in one of the outlets. It killed two employees. There were also complaints that the stores were usurping public roads and pavements and giving it out to only their customers. To counter this, it has automated multi layered car parking system in force. The family is considered by the Nadar community as beacons of trade.
Speaking at the inauguration, lyricist Vairamuthu said that the tall building was the pride of every Tamilian and recounted a post on WhatsApp. He said that a candidate in elections boasted about the crowd- pulling capacity of his. He was told by his opponent that the crowds that he saw was because he is standing in front of the popular store.
