Lit The Light: changemaker in the lives of visually challenged

Chennai,Dec31(tamilnaducentral): Lit The Light is a Chennai-based volunteering initiative striving to make a change in the lives of visually challenged.

The man behind Lit The Light is SN Barath, who got the seed idea to mobilize and garner support for the visually challenged in the year 2012. Encouraged by the good performance of one visually challenged student whom Barath assisted with reading, he got together with his friends, Ramkumar,Ravikanth and Adhiyan to make it happen on a larger scale.

With steady efforts and time, the volunteering group grew to be spearheaded by software professionals. It runs on the selfless services rendered by scores of  volunteers, young and old from across the city to light up the dark lives of visually challenged people.

Be it guiding and assisting them in education to sports or to provide support in employment generation, Lit The Light comes in to lead the visually challenged student to his/her goal.

Lit The Light has scores of readers and scribes under its fold who chip in with their writing and reading services for free at the right hour and place. They are assigned to  different schools and colleges to scribe in Tamil and English for the visually challenged students for terminal  exams in schools, semester exams in colleges and competitive examinations. The group mainly operates through WhatsApp with coordinators working in the background to keep it going  smoothly without hassles.

Reading sessions are arranged for the visually challenged students in different parts of the city either on daily or weekly basis.

Thozhan, another group dedicated to the social cause and that of common man and Vernalis Systems, a technology solutions provider have stood shoulder to shoulder with Lit The Light from the beginning in all of its endeavours.

Lit The Light Talent Search is yet another campaign targeted to spot innate but hidden talent among visually challenged people. The group has held sports events like cricket, volley ball and athletics. And the star player emerged in one Ramesh, who was the only visually challenged player to represent India in the Blind Cricket World Cup 2014. Lit The Light supported Ramesh with getting sponsorships and playing kit. Now, the team looks to expand its wings to search and nurture talent among visually challenged across Tamil Nadu.
